What is a RIPE LIR?
RIPE NCC is the Regional Internet Registry responsible for managing IP address space and Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs) across Europe, the Middle East and parts of Central Asia. A Local Internet Registry (LIR) is a RIPE member authorised to request and manage internet number resources on behalf of customers. QuickHost is a RIPE NCC LIR and can sponsor your resources without you needing direct membership.
What does RIPE sponsorship mean?
RIPE sponsorship allows your organisation to hold Provider Independent (PI) IP addresses or an ASN without becoming a RIPE member yourself. QuickHost acts as your sponsoring LIR, managing the relationship with RIPE NCC and handling administrative requirements on your behalf.
What are Provider Independent (PI) resources?
Provider Independent (PI) IP addresses are assigned directly to your organisation rather than to a hosting provider. This means you can move your IP space between different service providers without renumbering your network, giving you greater flexibility and long-term stability.
Can I obtain IPv4 addresses?
IPv4 address space in the RIPE region is fully allocated, and no new PI IPv4 assignments are generally available. IPv4 space may still be obtained through transfers, leasing, or provider allocation,s depending on availability and policy requirements.
Can I obtain Provider Independent IPv6 addresses?
Yes. IPv6 PI address space is available subject to RIPE policy and appropriate justification. Once approved, the prefix can be routed globally using your ASN.
What is an Autonomous System Number (ASN)?
An Autonomous System Number (ASN) is a globally unique identifier that allows your network to run BGP and announce IP prefixes to other networks. An ASN is typically required if you plan to multi-home with two or more upstream providers or require independent routing control.
What is the difference between PA, Sub-PA and PI IP addresses?
Provider Aggregatable (PA) IP addresses are allocated to a Local Internet Registry (LIR), such as QuickHost, and assigned to customers from the LIR’s own allocation. These IPs remain part of the provider’s address space and cannot normally be moved to another provider.
Sub-PA IP addresses are a smaller assignment made from a larger PA allocation. They are still tied to the sponsoring LIR but may be registered in the RIPE database as being used by your organisation.
Provider Independent (PI) IP addresses are assigned directly to your organisation via a sponsoring LIR. PI space is portable, meaning you can move it between providers without renumbering your network, giving you greater flexibility and long-term control.
